Zohara al-Fassyia (1905-1994) was a Moroccan Jewish singer and poet, considered a pioneer of classic Arabic music. The poem, "שיר זוהרה אל פסיה", composed by renowned Mizrahi poet Erez Bitton, surrounds her glorious figure.

Zohara al-Fassiya Poem

Erez Bitton, 1976

Zohara al-Fassiya,

the courtyard singer at Sultan Muhammad the Fifth’s house in Rabat, Morocco.

They say that when she sang,

soldiers fought with knives

to clear a path through the throng

to reach the hem of her dress,

to kiss the tips of her fingers,

to place a real coin as a token of gratitude.

Zohara Al Fassiya,

today, she can be found

in Ashkelon, in the Antiquities G neighborhood, near the soup kitchen,

the scent of sardine cans on a wobbly three-legged table,

magnificent royal carpets, adorned on a makeshift bed,

in a morning gown of mist

hours in the mirror

in the colors of cheap makeup

and when she says:

Sultan Muhammad the Fifth, the pupil of our eyes

you don’t understand at first glance.

To Zohara Al Fassiya, a hoarse voice,

a clear heart, and eyes full of love.

Zohara Al Fassiya.
